42 hours on average, since the 28 days hold 168 hours. No real week looks like that. Counted Sunday to Saturday, you get weeks of 12, 48 or 60 hours.

What is DuPont hell week?

It’s the week with six shifts in it. Counting from the four nights, as TurnoRest does, that’s days 8 to 14 of the cycle, when 3 day shifts, 1 day off and 3 nights put 72 hours into 7 days. No other week of the rotation is as heavy, and that single day off is all you get to switch from days to nights.

Circadian, a shift-scheduling consultancy, calls it the schedule’s most cited downside in its DuPont guide.

What is a modified DuPont schedule?

It isn’t one fixed schedule. Employers use the name for their own changes to the 28 days. Circadian’s guide mentions a training day during the week off, or a fifth crew to cover absences.   • Why is it called the DuPont schedule?

    Because people inside DuPont, the chemical company, designed it in the 1950s to replace the 8-hour shifts its plants were running. It spread through the chemical industry from there.

  • Do you get overtime on a DuPont schedule?

    Under the FLSA’s 40-hour week, yes. The 60-hour weeks go well past 40, and TurnoRest counts 468 hours of overtime in 2026 with day 1 on Monday, January 5, 2026. Some employers count it another way, and the calculator above has their rules too.
