Kelly 24/48 schedule
One 24-hour shift, then two full days off. It’s the 24/48 that fire and EMS crews work, and some departments add a Kelly day to bring the week down.
Start on January 5, 2026 and New Year’s Eve is a shift, 7 AM to 7 AM, so you see 2027 in at work. Pick your own day 1, a Kelly schedule or a 48/96 in the calendar and it redraws.
Kelly day calculator
A Kelly day every seventh shift cuts the overtime past 212 hours from 152 hours to 16 in 2026, with the 28-day period starting on day 1. Start the period on another day and it’s 148 to 172 hours without the Kelly day, 0 to 20 with it. 2027 has 17 Kelly days with day 1 on Monday, January 5, 2026. Pick a Kelly in the calendar below and put in your day 1.

What is a Kelly day?
A scheduled shift you are given off, so that the average week comes down. Each department decides how often. Take every seventh shift off a 24/48 and the average week drops from 56 hours to 48.
“Kelly schedule” can also mean a 9-day cycle: 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 96 off. That makes it a 56-hour Kelly, the same average week as a plain 24/48, with the rest bunched into four days.
How does overtime work on a 24/48 schedule?
Fire departments can use the FLSA’s 28-day work period, with overtime after 212 hours. Any 28 days of a 24/48 hold 9 or 10 shifts, 216 or 240 hours, so every period goes over.
TurnoRest finds 152 hours of overtime in 2026 on that rule, with the 28-day period starting on day 1. At $28 an hour, with no night or weekend differential, the year comes to $84,112 before taxes.
To check one pay period on that rule, use the shift pay calculator.

No Kelly days in this one, and no full weekend off: every Friday, Saturday and Sunday has one shift among them, and Friday’s runs into Saturday morning. Departments set Kelly days their own way; pick a Kelly below, or see them side by side above.

How many hours a year is a 24/48 schedule?
2,904 hours in 2027, which is 121 shifts, and 2,928 in 2026, with day 1 on Monday, January 5, 2026.
The 2,912 you’ll see quoted is 56 hours times 52 weeks, an average no real year hits. A year holds whole shifts, 121 or 122 of them, so 2,904 or 2,928 hours.

48/96 and 24/72 schedules
The 48/96 averages the same 56 hours a week as the 24/48, worked as two 24-hour shifts back to back and then four days off. The 24/72 gives you a third day off after every shift and comes down to 42 hours a week.
- 48/966-day cycle, two shifts back to back56 ha week
- 24/724-day cycle42 ha week
How many hours a year is a 48/96 schedule?
2,904 hours in 2027, from 121 shifts of 24 hours, with day 1 on Monday, January 5, 2026. Start the cycle on another day and it’s 2,904 or 2,928 hours, the same as a 24/48. A 24/72 comes to 2,184 hours in 2027.
Does a 48/96 go over 212 hours?
Not always. Any 28 days of a 48/96 hold 8 to 10 shifts, 192 to 240 hours, so a period can end under 212, depending on the day it starts. In 2026, with the 28-day period starting on day 1, TurnoRest counts 228 hours of overtime on the fire rule, more than the 152 of a 24/48. Each period is counted on its own, so a short one doesn’t cancel a long one. Start the period on another day and the 48/96 has 147 to 252 hours, the 24/48 148 to 172. A 24/72 never reaches the line, since any 28 days hold 7 shifts, 168 hours.
Is sleep time paid on a 48/96?
Under section 7(k), yes, unless your department and its crews agreed to leave it out. That agreement only works on a tour longer than 24 hours, like the 48 of a 48/96, and takes out at most 8 hours of sleep in each 24. A call during the night counts as work, and if calls leave you under 5 hours of sleep, the whole night counts. On a tour of exactly 24 hours, like the 24/48, sleep always counts under 7(k). A department on the 40-hour week can leave out up to 8 hours of sleep on tours of 24 hours or more, by agreement, if crews have beds and usually sleep through the night. TurnoRest counts every hour of every shift.
The rules are 29 CFR 553.222 and 29 CFR 785.22.

FLSA 7(k) work periods
Under section 7(k) a fire or police department can count overtime over a work period of 7 to 28 days instead of a week. For fire the line runs from 212 hours in 28 days down to 53 in 7.

Do paramedics and EMTs fall under the 212-hour rule?
Yes, if the department uses the 7(k) work period and they’re trained and authorized to fight fires. It has to be the fire department of a city, county, fire district or state. That’s how the rule defines fire protection, and it names paramedics, EMTs, rescue workers and ambulance crews. Dispatchers and other civilian staff are left out. So is anyone at a private ambulance company, since 7(k) covers only public agencies.
The definition is in 29 CFR 553.210, and the public-agency rule in 29 CFR 553.201.

24/48 pros and cons
Two days off after every shift is the draw. Each shift is a full day and a night.
Pros
Two full days off after every shift, all year.
121 trips to work in 2027, against 182 on a 12-hour rotation like DuPont.
Cons
Every shift is 24 hours, twice the 12 the Institute of Medicine recommends for nurses. The app flags anything over 14 hours as critical. That 14 is TurnoRest’s own line, not a published limit.
Behind it: Institute of Medicine 2004, NIOSH 2015, UK HSE, Rogers et al. 2004, Dembe et al. 2005, Fischer et al. 2017
A week with three shifts is 72 hours. The Institute of Medicine’s limit for nurses is 60.
Behind it: Institute of Medicine 2004, NIOSH 2015, Dembe et al. 2005
No full weekend off on the plain 24/48, not one in 2027. One of any three days in a row is a shift, and a Friday shift runs into Saturday.
None of these limits is law for most US workers. The sleep planner lists where each comes from.
Putting Kelly 24/48 in the app
- Pattern
Pick Kelly 24/48 (24 h) from the list.
- First day of the cycle
Set it to your day 1, the date in the calendar above.
Support explains how to find your day 1.
Adding Kelly 24/48 to the iPhone Calendar by hand takes one event that repeats every 3 days. With Pro it’s one switch.
How do I put a 48/96 or a Kelly schedule in the app?
Pick Kelly 24/48 (24 h), and Draw my own pattern… opens the editor on its three days, with the 24-hour shift on day 1. Every 24-hour shift has to be a copy of that one, since the editor’s Length stops at 16 hours.
For a 24/72, tap Add day. For a 48/96, tap Repeat the cycle (duplicate), then Edit, and drag day 4 up under day 1. A Kelly takes a few repeats, then deleting days and removing shifts until the cycle matches your department’s. The app shows a 48 as two 24-hour shifts, and flags the lack of rest between them.
Questions
What is a 24/48 schedule?
A 24-hour shift followed by 48 hours off, on a 3-day cycle. Every shift runs through a night. In TurnoRest it starts at 7 AM and hands over at 7 AM the next day. Three platoons, a day apart, cover every day of the year.
How many hours a week is a 24/48?
56 hours on average. Sunday to Saturday you work two or three shifts, so a week is 48 or 72 hours.
Why is it called a Kelly day?
Most likely after Edward Kelly, the mayor of Chicago who in 1936 got the city’s firefighters an extra day off.
The story comes from A Way with Words, the radio show about language.
